I have received questions about how grading will be handled this school year given the impact of the school closure orders. This includes questions about the issuance of grades, awarding of credits and calculation of GPA.
After examining the policies of other area high schools and colleges and lengthy discussions to craft a policy suitable for the particular nuances of Maynard High School, the policies given below were developed.
We freely acknowledge that the situation we are in is so unusual and so unprecedented no system could be perfect for every possible scenario that an individual student might experience. The policies below do contain a provision that allows for an appeal should you feel your particular situation contains circumstances that go beyond what is being experienced by the majority of students.

Grading Policies for Maynard High School During the 2019-2020 School Year Only
Due to the mandated closure of Maynard High School associated with the COVID 19 pandemic from March 13, 2020 through the end of the school year on June 15, 2020, and the resulting impact on the third and fourth marking quarters at Maynard High School, the following grading policies will be in force at Maynard High School for the 2019-2020 school year:
For semester based courses the first semester will stand as originally graded with quarter grades and semester grades left as given. First semester courses have a value of 2.5 credits and will factor into GPA.
The second semester of the year will have had 30 days of normal instruction and 60 days of remote learning by year’s end. Based on this fact, semester based courses taken during the second semester will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis. 2.5 credits will be awarded for semester based courses passed during the second semester. Semester based courses taken during the second semester will not factor into GPA. VHS classes offered as a single semester course during the second semester will have courses graded, weighted, and factored into GPA normally.
Students will have had 120 days of direct instruction through March 13th and will have received numerical grades for the first three marking quarters. Full year courses will be graded by taking a weighted average for the first three quarters of the year. The 1st and 2nd quarters will be weighted 40% each and the third quarter 20%. This weighting system skews away from the disrupted third quarter by 5%. 3.75 credits will be awarded for courses passed. The first three quarters graded in this fashion will count toward GPA. The 4th quarter of full year courses will be awarded “Credit” or “No Credit.” 4th quarter classes will be worth 1.25 credits. 4th quarter classes will not factor into GPA. An exception will be made for full year VHS classes which will be graded normally, awarded credits normally and factor into GPA normally.
Students will have the right to petition the Principal for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment to make adjustments to these policies based upon evidence of extenuating circumstances during the school closure period.
