Good afternoon, everyone--

With February 2014 now a cold and snowy memory, it can only mean that Spring (that's right Spring!) is right around the corner.  There are a number of important events coming up and several significant announcements.  Please take a few minutes to skim over the items below and stop to read in more detail any items that seem particularly pertinent to you and your family.

GRADUATION!  Maynard High School will be holding graduation on Saturday June 7, 2014 at 3:00pm at Alumni Field.  In the event of inclement weather (including extreme heat and humidity) the event will be held inside the high school gymnasium.  Please note that the time slot is earlier than the past three years.

The Secretary of State of the United States of America loves us & Now We Need Host Families (Stipends Available)!  Maynard High School has been in active contact with two agencies specializing in placing international students in American high schools.  Secretary of State Kerry on behalf of  the entire United States State Department has commended us on these new partnerships.  Our first student, from Brazil, under these programs joined us just last month.  We anticipate several additional students will be joining us next year in late August.  These students will be paying full district tuition and all school fees when they join us.  We are in need of host families for these students.  The programs we are working with help families defray the cost of hosting a student by paying stipends of between $800.00 and $1,000.00 per month to insure that cost is not an impediment to a sound placement.  If you are interested in this outstanding opportunity to make a difference in the Maynard and Global communities please contact Assistant Principal Purnima Vadhera or myself for more information.

Winter Sports Celebration:  Please Join us on Wednesday March 12th at 6:45pm in our theater for a celebration of the many achievements of our winter athletes.  This event is always a highlight of our year and could not possibly be done without the logistical and financial support of our Boosters group.

Beauty and the Beast!  The first musical to be produced in the new Performing Arts Center, Beauty and the Beast, will open in just a few short weeks! Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased online via mktix (google this and the site will come up), or at the ticket booth at MHS.

The show has 80 in its cast and 20 in its crews, and has been an amazing town effort with many adults from town contributing to building and painting sets, selling tickets and making costumes.

Don't miss the new MHS' first performance!!!

Show are scheduled on March 15th at 7:00pm, March 16th at 2:00pm, March 21st at 7:00pm, March 22nd at 7:00pm, and March 23rd at 2:00pm.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey given in coordination with Emerson Hospital and area districts will be given to all students in grades 6, and 8-12 on Tuesday March 11, 2014.  Maynard schools have been involved in this project since 2000 and have collected valuable data around student behaviors and perceptions that have driven curriculum and policies community wide.  The survey will take approximately 40 minutes and will be completely anonymous.  If you have any questions around this process, please contact your building principal no later than Thursday March 6.  Thank you for your support of the Maynard Schools and its initiatives.

MassBay College Credit:  Juniors and Seniors interested in taking a current MHS course for MassBay credit should see their counselor for a registration packet.  Approved classes are AP Literature, AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP Biology, Advanced Anatomy, AP Calculus, and Honors Pre-calculus.  See guidance with any questions.  The first class taken is free and counts for 3 transferable college credits.

MCAS Preparation for Sophomores!  Starting Wednesday March 5, Mrs. Bearden and Ms. Dowd will be providing FREE MCAS preparation after school for Mathematics.  This is available to any interested sophomore.  It will run from 2:05-3:00 every Wednesday until the math MCAS test in May.  It is to help refresh students on all the topics that are addressed on the MCAS.  Please see Mrs. Bearden or Ms. Dowd if you are interested in partaking in this program.

WAVM FCC License Renewed Until 2024!  Thanks to the hard work of Mr. Minasian, Ms. Filz, Ms. Gilfeather, the student leaders, and student membership of WAVM we have completed the arduous FCC License renewal process and will remain on the air as one of only a handful of high schools in the Commonwealth with a FCC license to broadcast through February 2024.  Way to go WAVM!

Light It Up Blue event at Clock Tower!  We are thrilled that the Maynard Public Schools have participated World Autism Day for several years by encouraging students and staff to wear Blue.  World Autism Day will be April 2nd this year.  Please join Danielle Mannion and her family, including her son and MHS student Jae, as they again meet outside Clock Tower Place at sunset to watch the clock turn Blue.

Ms.  Mannion has provided the link for Light It Up Blue and the Autism Speaks store that carries the T-shirts, bracelets and other items below.  Also, Home Depot and Ace Hardware in Stow will carry the blue light bulbs that people can use to light up their homes. As Danielle puts it, "I can't tell you how thrilled Jae is to see the lights on people's front doors! Hopefully all of our students on the Spectrum will see these lights and feel that our town honors them!"

So come on Maynard High,  Light It Up Blue again this year!

I'd like to close by once again thanking the entire Maynard High School community including students, staff, parents and community members for the tremendous work and dedication that I see every day here at MHS.  Our recent designation as a "Commended School" by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a testament to all.

I went on the DESE (Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) website last night and looked up the publically available school report card for MHS.  You will immediately see "Level 1" and the word "Commended" describing our school.  Only 11 other high schools in all of Massachusetts can make the same claim.  I invite you to look over the entire report card and believe you will be pleased with and proud of  the results you see.

Take care--

Chuck Caragianes

Principal of Maynard High School
