A Midsummer's Night Post (with apologies to William Shakespeare)

posted Aug 2, 2012, 12:50 PM by Chuck Caragianes

We are at the midpoint of summer and back to school thoughts are naturally creeping in as the calendar turns to August.  The first day of school is now only 4 weeks away as students will be returning on Wednesday August 29th.  Please note this date as it is a change from previous years with students returning on Wednesday rather than Tuesday.

As you likely know Dr. Laura Chesson has accepted a position as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum in the Arlington Public Schools.  The Maynard High School community thanks Dr. Chesson for her four dedicated years of service to Maynard and wishes her well in her new role in Arlington.

I am fortunate to have worked under Dr. Chesson last year as her Assistant Principal and welcome the remarkable opportunity to now lead Maynard High School as the new Principal starting just this past July 1st.  I am truly fortunate because the students, staff, parents, administration, political leadership and community of Maynard all work together to help forge a remarkable high school and I will do my utmost to work with all of these constituencies to make Maynard High School an ever stronger place.

The month of July has been incredibly busy.  Our new high school building is now one third complete and work is advancing at a rapid pace as we prepare to move into the new building in approximately one year.  Hiring for several positions continues to go well with our new STEM Coordinator and Technology teacher John Mollica on board, welcome John, and interviews proceeding for our new assistant principal, social studies teacher, and school nurse.  A new Special Education teacher, Carolyn Athens, has also been hired and I look forward to working with her in the coming school year.  You likely already know that Kevin Caruso has moved into the Athletic Directors role and has been working hard and productively all summer.  Thank you Kevin, for all of your efforts over the past several weeks.

Academically our rising freshmen can find their summer reading on the school website and a welcoming cookout for freshmen and their families will be held on August 21st featuring information on our new IPAD initiative and mentoring program.

Schedules for students are very nearly complete for the upcoming year.  We are in the process of double checking each student’s individual schedule and making final adjustments prior to releasing the schedules through IPASS.  We are targeting Monday August 6th to complete this important task.

Fall sports will be starting up in just a couple of weeks so please watch for news from Kevin Caruso in this area.

A few final notes:  I am commonly asked how my last name is pronounced given the rather uncommon spelling of Caragianes.  Simply say the girls name “Kara” and the girls name “Janice” back to back and you’ll have it.  Kara-Janice.  Of course Chuck always works as well.

I will be updating this area of the school website throughout the year and am available by phone, email or in person at Maynard High School.

Thank you very much.  I look forward to meeting each and every one of you.
