Fall is in the Air

posted Sep 25, 2015, 9:27 AM by Chuck Caragianes

Good afternoon—

The month of September is rapidly drawing to a close and with the Autumnal Equinox marking the start of fall this past Wednesday the school year is now most definitely well established.

Student attendance has been exceptional and as I visit classrooms and walk through the halls daily the tone of the school features a focus on academics within a friendly and caring environment.   Students and staff alike have gotten the 2015-2016 school year off to a tremendous start and it is a testament to the good will and respect shared by all.

A number of noteworthy MHS events, announcements and dates follow:

Back to School Night September 29th

From 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday Night September 29th we will be holding our annual “Back to School Night” at Maynard High School.

This is an opportunity to walk through your student’s schedule, gain an understanding of course content and methodology and meet your child’s teacher in a group setting with other parents.  This event is not designed to be an individual Parent-Teacher meeting; however as is always the case at any time, our guidance counselors will also be on hand to schedule such meetings should you feel one is necessary.

From 6:00-6:30pm we will distribute schedules, have a question and answer session for parents and have a bake sale.  From 6:30 to 8:00pm you will have a chance to attend a session with all of your students teachers following the same schedule your children do.

Halloween Costume Fundraiser

The class of 2018 wishes to thank everyone who has donated costumes to the fundraiser coming up on Saturday.

The costume sale date is 9/26/15. All unsold costumes will be donated to local charities.

Fund Raisers for MHS trip to Cuba

“Spirit Connections with Miss Tiffany Rice”

Say What??

Just in time for Halloween on October 29th join with Tiffany Rice for an evening with a Spirit Medium!  The readings begin at 6:30 and run to 8:30 right here at Maynard High School.  Light Refreshments will be served.  Tickets are available for $40 per person through Courtney Lawton at lawtonc12@hotmail.com  Spaces are limited.

Though there may not be time for everyone to have an individual reading, you’ll certainly receive an evening of great entertainment while benefitting a student group preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cuba.

Ava Anderson Non Toxic

Courtney Lawton is an MHS parent and an independent salesperson for Ava Anderson Non Toxic, a company that makes only non-toxic products for the home, car, body, and pet care.  She will donate 20% of all sales from this fundraiser to the MHS group that will travel to Cuba this April.

As a bonus, everyone who places an order with her will be eligible to win a $50 gift basket she will be raffling off.

This fundraiser (and chance for the $50 gift basket) begins today and will go until October 15.  To place an order, go to the following website:

Smartest Kids in the World Book Discussion

Maynard Public Schools is hosting a book discussion of Amanda Ripley’s Smartest Kids In the World on September 30 from 7:00-8:00 PM at Maynard High School.

Launched as the Maynard Public Schools first “Community Summer Read” last spring, Ripely’s account of three diverse education cultures provides an excellent starting point for our community to discuss what kind of educational culture we want in Maynard.  This discussion will be led by Jennifer Gaudet, the Maynard Public Schools Curriculum Director.  Please join us and other faculty and staff to share your thoughts on the book and your vision for education in Maynard.

To find out more about Smartest Kids in the World, here is a link to the New York Time’s Reviewfor this book.  There are several copies of the book available at the Maynard Public Library.  While we certainly recommend this book as a great read, by no means is reading the book required for you to join this discussion.  In fact, we are really interested in gaining our communities perspective on education and the book discussion will just facilitate that.

So we can adequately prepare refreshments, please RSVP by filling out this brief form or calling Colleen Moore at 978-897-2222.  We look forward to seeing you on September 30 at 7:00 PM at the High School for this important conversation.

Comedy Show Fundraiser

On Saturday evening October 3rd head on down to the Maynard Lodge of Elks for a laugh filled night with a great line up of comedians hosted by Steve Halligan.  Local comedy stars Patty Gould, Karman Rays, Spike Tobin, Alynn Allman, Bill McMorrow and the irrepressible Tony V will light up your evening.

The Doors open at 7:00pm and the show starts at 8:00pm.  Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.  To order tickets or for more information call Niki at 978-3601471, Pauline 978-580-7261 or Ed Wasiuk 978-793-1488.

Proceeds benefit Honor Flight New England, Maynard Vietnam Era Memorial Fund and other Veterans organizations.

Have a great weekend—

Chuck Caragianes

Principal of Maynard High School
