Graduation Weekend!

Good afternoon--


Graduation weekend is here and there is a real sense of excitement at Maynard High School.


Last night our Senior Awards Ceremony was held and a large crowd of parents, grandparents, siblings, other family members, friends and supporters gathered to hear about the extraordinary accomplishments of the class of 2016 and to support our seniors.  This was our largest turnout in quite some time and I’d like to thank all who attended as well as the numerous staff members who helped with the setup and logistics and acted as presenters.  I’d also like to thank the class of 2016 for their near universal attendance and support for one another.


A new tradition has been born.  This morning our seniors gathered in their caps and gowns and walked through the Green Meadow grounds on their way to the high school as the Green Meadow students looked on and cheered.  Then it was on to the Fowler and finally the high school.  Our graduating seniors are tremendous role models for their peers and present a tangible vision of the future to their fellow Maynard Public Schools students.  And everyone involved loved it to boot!


Graduation is Saturday June 11th.  Seniors will be lined up and heading up to Alumni by 3:45pm.  Seniors ought to get to the school around 3:00 to receive their cords and cap and gown set.  The ceremony will begin promptly at 4:00pm.  Should the ceremony be outdoors as hoped, no tickets will be required.


Weather Considerations for Graduation and Admission Tickets.  As I write this,  the weather forecast for tomorrow afternoon is not certain.  Some predictions are for rain to hold off until late at night and others call for rain or thunderstorms at the time of our graduation.  A final decision regarding location will be made by 9:00am on Saturday based on the best available forecast at that time.

Set up and takedown for the event logistically takes hours.  Please understand that if the 9:00am forecast projects a reasonable chance of rain for the hours between 2:00pm and 8:00pm the ceremony will be held indoors.  In the event the ceremony is held indoors it will be in the Maynard High School Gymnasium starting at 4:00pm.  Tickets will be required for seating and each graduate is receiving 7 tickets.  No additional tickets will be handed out.


It remains a busy time of year at MHS and there are several detailed announcements this week.  Please take a look at each heading and read those that pertain to you or your child in detail.


Announcements & Upcoming Activities and Events:


Early Release Days for Underclassmen Final Exams

Final exams for underclassmen are now little over a week away and the end of the school year is coming up fast.  There were three school cancellations due to snow this year and the end of the year calendar has been adjusted to account for these missed days.  Underclassmen Final Exams will begin on Friday June 17th in the afternoon and continue through Wednesday June 22nd.


Friday June 17th will be a full day of school with a single exam in the afternoon.  There will be two exams per day on Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd.  These last three days of school, June 20-22, will be Early Release Days with students being dismissed at 10:55am.  8th Grade students will be dismissed at 10:55am June 20-22 as well.


Underclassmen Awards Ceremony

Our annual Underclassmen Awards Ceremony will be held next Friday June 17th from 8:45am to 10:45am in the auditorium.  Friday will be a very full day for our students with classes, the awards ceremony and an exam.  It is a day to be extra sure for students to be in on time and ready to go.


Gym Lockers

All gym lockers need to be emptied by the first exam Friday 6/17/2016.  Be prepared to take all items home with you by then.

All remaining items left in gym lockers will be placed on the lost and found area on the tables in the gym lobby.

The lost and found tables will have  LOST and FOUND  items displayed from noon Friday 6/17 toll noon Friday 6/24   Please make an effort to come by and claim your lost items.

All unclaimed items will be delivered to a Goodwill box at noon 6/24/2016


International Exchange Program

For almost two decades Maynard High School has had foreign exchange students attending our school to learn more about our culture while studying abroad.  A mutual benefit has been that ultimately they end up sharing their culture with us as well.

We are looking for host families.  Host families would welcome the student into their home and be given a stipend of $700 per month to cover expenses.  The students would need their own room with a bed, dresser, and desk.

Honor a Teacher by Participating in the Maynard Education Foundation's Teacher Tribute Program

Facilities Request Forms

Any group wishing to use the school buildings for meetings or activities are required to complete a Facilities Request Form.  Forms are available here at MHS and requests for use during the 2016-2017 school year are now coming in.  Requests from now through July will be processed in early August.

Food Services

The following letter from Food Services regarding accounts as the year approaches its end follows:

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Beginning in May 2016 it is necessary for the Food Service Department to begin to close the books on our year. This involves collecting payment for all outstanding cafeteria charges. Unpaid charges at the end of the year are a financial strain on Maynard Public School’s food service department.

If you are receiving this email, even if you qualify for free or reduced lunch, your child(ren) owe money to their School’s Cafeteria.

You will receive a separate email from our Food Service program which will include the amount owed.  Please be sure to add additional money to cover future lunch purchases.

·  Graduating Seniors must pay any outstanding balance in full by their last day of school, June 3rd; this is a Senior Obligation that must be done before Seniors can receive their cap and gown.

·  All other students must pay their balance in full by the last day of school, June 21st.

·  Any student leaving Maynard Public Schools, who has a positive balance, may send a written request for a refund or for the balance to be transferred to a siblings account.

Starting on Wednesday, May 4th the Food Service Program will be changing their “Meal Charge” policy.  The cafeteria cash registers will be programmed to prevent further charges if a student owes money on their account or if the purchase will cause them to owe money.  Weekly emails have gone out all year alerting families of negative or low balances.  If your student has a negative account balance regardless of free or reduced lunch status, the student will no longer be provided all the lunch options available. Instead they will be provided and charged for the alternative lunch option consisting of: Cheese Sandwich, Vegetable, fruit and milk.  All negative balances must be paid by the end of this school year.  

If your student owes a high balance, we would like the opportunity to work with you to find a solution to this bill which is now due.
