It's Back to School Time!

posted Aug 30, 2017, 8:26 AM by Chuck Caragianes

Good afternoon,

The calendar has drifted into late August and it is time to get ready for the 2017-2018 school year.  I’m very excited to get the school year going and I am confident that it will be another outstanding 10 months ahead.   Our goal for the year ahead is your goal for the year ahead:  A successful year for your child, or children, filled with growth academically, socially and behaviorally.

Our students’ first day is next Wednesday August 30th and they should report to the gymnasium to start the day.  Though the day does not technically start until 7:45am I urge all students to be in by 7:30am to pick up their new schedule and be ready for actual activities to begin promptly at 7:45am.

Greeting your students will be our first rate staff including 6 new members this year. Please join me in welcoming Physics Teacher Angelo Villani, World Languages Teacher Sigifredo Jara, English Learners Teacher Justine Ferguson, Special Education Teacher Jamie Boda, School Nurse Mary Ferranti (Transferring to MHS from the Fowler) and Secretary Gail Lucas to the Maynard High School community.

I am quite pleased indeed to have such a first rate group of professionals joining us at Maynard High School!

As a reminder, Maynard High School opens for students at 7:00am for breakfast and academic classes begin promptly at 7:45am.  There is no traditional homeroom period.  If your student is walking into the building at 7:45 they will be late for the day and late to class where they will be missing academic work.  A 7:30 arrival all year long will ensure that your student has time to visit their locker, say hi to their friends, get settled for the day ahead and get to class on time.

Related to being on time, please be aware of the following:

When your students arrive each morning all food and beverages must be consumed in the cafeteria and cannot go up to the classrooms.  We have students with quite severe food allergies and introducing food into classrooms greatly increases the possibility of a strong allergic reaction.  So if your student is stopping for coffee and a bagel in the morning, they’ll need to build in time to eat it prior to going to class rather than thinking they’ll be munching or sipping during 1st period class.

Our guidance counselors will all be in next week and are very responsive to emails and phone calls.  Should you or your child need assistance with anything related to their schedule feel free to contact Lisa MacLean, Dana MacPhee or Renee Muise.

As the year unfolds, feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns.

All the best to you and your family for the 2017-2018 school year,

Chuck Caragianes

Below are some additional items of note and upcoming events:

A Celebratory Cookout for Our Hard Working Students

This summer many of our students have been working at WAVM, in Music, in Sports and have been volunteering their time at the school and in the community.  All of these students are invited to a back to school cookout this Tuesday evening from 6:00-7:30 on the patio in front of Maynard High School.  Come on over for a great time!

Congratulations are very much in order for Paul Howes who was named Division IV Central Boys Basketball Coach of the Year by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association.  Paul will be honored at their annual banquet on November 19th.  The Tigers are not only the reigning State Champions, but were the State runner up the year before that and are the two time defending Central Massachusetts champions.  Well done and well earned.

Jazz & Wind Ensembles

Our Jazz & Wind Ensemble, once again under the direction of Tricia Gately, will be holding a kickoff event at the The Pleasant Cafe on September 10th from 5:00 to 7:00pm.

The Pleasant Cafe is located at 36 Main Street right here in Maynard.

Come on in for some good music and good times.

Our Project 351 Leader

Aurora Estabrook, a ninth-grader at MHS and ambassador of Project 351, joins more than 300 other young leaders across the Commonwealth in a statewide youth-led service initiative. Aurora’s Fall Service Project will benefit Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund (MMHF), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to the families of military personnel with ties to Massachusetts who have died as a result of active duty service post 9/11/2001. MMHF is partnering with Project 351 to collect donations for troops overseas and local homeless veterans.

Project 351 is a non-profit, statewide youth-driven organization that annually picks one eighth-grader from every city and town in Massachusetts to serve for a one year term.

For Aurora’s Fall Service Project, she will be collecting items requested by MMHF in bins around town. Bins are currently located at the police station and will also be located at each of the three school lobbies, starting the first day of school. Donations will be accepted until August 31st at all locations. Maynard community members are encouraged to drop off the following items:

-Instant powdered drink mixes - single serve or travel sized only

-Single serve instant coffee (not decaf)

-Single serve instant powdered creamer

-Bubble gum or chewing gum

-Patriotic cards/letters of gratitude (if putting in envelopes, please do not seal)

Please remember that every donation counts. No matter how small, your donations will make a big difference in someone’s life. Thank you for your help!
