Next Tuesday May 24th is our Senior Project Showcase starting at 5:30pm.  This year our Senior Engineering students will also be displaying their project work starting at 6:00pm.  Please join us and see the high quality research and work our students have been completing this year.


This is a busy time of year at MHS and there are several detailed announcements this week.  Please take a look at each heading and read those that pertain to you or your child in detail.


Announcements & Upcoming Activities and Events:


Facilities Request Forms

Any group wishing to use the school buildings for meetings or activities are required to complete a Facilities Request Form.  Forms are available here at MHS and requests for use during the 2016-2017 school year are now coming in.  Requests from now through July will be processed in early August.

Early Release Days for Underclassmen Final Exams

Final exams are now less than a month away and the end of the school year is coming up fast.  There were three school cancellations due to snow this year and the end of the year calendar has been adjusted to account for these missed days.  Underclassmen Final Exams will begin on Friday June 17th and continue through Wednesday June 22nd.


Friday June 17th will be a full day of school with a single exam in the afternoon.  There will be two exams per day on Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd.  These last three days of school, June 20-22, will be Early Release Days with students being dismissed at 10:55am.  8th Grade students will be dismissed at 10:55am June 20-22 as well.


Parent's Guide to Waging War on Drugs: Forewarned is Forearmed

Please join us for the very informative and important presentation by F. George Herring, A Parent's Guide to Waging War on Drugs: Forewarned is Forearmed.  Herring is a case investigator, for the Fatal Overdose Narcotics Bureau in Long Island, New York. The presentation will aim to provide information about the current drug culture, help recognize signs of abuse and provide practical advice for the unfortunate event you discover a member of your household has an addiction problem.

Time: 7:30pm

Place: Maynard High School Auditorium.


The Solo and Ensemble Concert

The Solo and Ensemble Concert is Wed., May 25th at 7pm (jazz, wind ensemble, madrigals and a cappella groups), the Memorial Day Parade is Monday May 30th and the Music Banquet is that evening at 5pm. Band and satb chorus will also be performing at Graduation on June 11.

Baseline Concussion Testing – No Fee!

Emerson Hospital and Maynard High School are pleased to offer baseline concussion testing for Maynard High School students. Through a generous grant from the Emerson Women's Auxiliary the tests are for all students free of charge this school year. These tests create a cognitive and functional baseline for individuals that serve as a reference point when determining if your student has sustained a concussion and needs to be referred to a doctor. Appointments for this free baseline concussion testing are available to all high school students and will be scheduled after school on May 31st, June 1st or June 2nd upon parental request. The tests will be conducted after school at Fowler Middle School in the computer labs.

Sports

Graduation Balloon sale!

Graduation of the class of 2016 is right around the corner, and you can congratulate any senior on this great milestone by purchasing a fabulous orange Mylar balloon in the shape of a star with the “Class of 2016” written on them. We will place them on the house of the designated senior on June 10th! They are only $5 for the first balloon and $4 for each additional balloon ordered. You can order them by emailing the name of the senior to odoktorov@maynard.k12.ma.us . All orders must be submitted and paid in full via a check payable to MHS Class of 2018 or cash brought to the main office by May 27th.



Emerson Hospital Run/Walk for Cancer Prevention

In only 3 weeks, Emerson Hospital will host its 16th annual Run~Walk for Cancer at the Thoreau Club Outdoor Center in Concord!!  We hope that you will join your many friends and neighbors in their support of Emerson’s cancer patients at this fun, family friendly event on June 4th.  In addition to the run and walk, activities include swimming, tie dye, bounce house, field games, food, music and more!  Visitwww.emersonhospital.org/5k to register, volunteer or donate today!


SEPAC Ice Cream Social

The Maynard SEPAC Ice Cream Social will be held on Tuesday, June 7th

from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Fowler School cafeteria. All students

receiving Special Education services in Maynard and their families are

invited to attend. This popular event will have lots of crafts,

activities, and fun! This event is free and open to the whole family

of students receiving Special Education services in Maynard. Please

Food Services

The following letter from Food Services regarding accounts as the year approaches its end follows:

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Beginning in May 2016 it is necessary for the Food Service Department to begin to close the books on our year. This involves collecting payment for all outstanding cafeteria charges. Unpaid charges at the end of the year are a financial strain on Maynard Public School’s food service department.

If you are receiving this email, even if you qualify for free or reduced lunch, your child(ren) owe money to their School’s Cafeteria.

You will receive a separate email from our Food Service program which will include the amount owed.  Please be sure to add additional money to cover future lunch purchases.

·  Graduating Seniors must pay any outstanding balance in full by their last day of school, June 3rd; this is a Senior Obligation that must be done before Seniors can receive their cap and gown.

·  All other students must pay their balance in full by the last day of school, June 21st.

·  Any student leaving Maynard Public Schools, who has a positive balance, may send a written request for a refund or for the balance to be transferred to a siblings account.

Starting on Wednesday, May 4th the Food Service Program will be changing their “Meal Charge” policy.  The cafeteria cash registers will be programmed to prevent further charges if a student owes money on their account or if the purchase will cause them to owe money.  Weekly emails have gone out all year alerting families of negative or low balances.  If your student has a negative account balance regardless of free or reduced lunch status, the student will no longer be provided all the lunch options available. Instead they will be provided and charged for the alternative lunch option consisting of: Cheese Sandwich, Vegetable, fruit and milk.  All negative balances must be paid by the end of this school year.  

If your student owes a high balance, we would like the opportunity to work with you to find a solution to this bill which is now due.

Maynard Minuteman Senior Services, a regional social services agency, seeks a part-time Dining Coordinator for our Maynard dining site (located at the Senior Center on Concord Street Circle). Minuteman Senior Services is an innovative non-profit agency offering seniors, disabled adults, and care givers information, assistance and support in 16 towns. We operate 15 programs that provide solutions to help our consumers live independently, in the comfort of home. Our nutrition programs include congregate dining sites, Meals on Wheels, nutrition counseling and Healthy Living classes. POSITION SUMMARY: The Dining Coordinator provides food service and volunteer management in a small dining room setting and is responsible for creating and maintaining a warm and welcoming environment for the seniors who utilize this service. This is a great job for someone seeking part-time hours; recent retirees and stay-at-home parents are encouraged to apply! Schedule: Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:  Create a warm and welcoming dining experience for seniors in a community setting targeted at helping seniors stay healthy and engaged.  Make diligent efforts to identify and reach lower-income, disabled and/or isolated people age 60 and over by using outreach methods including coordination of effort with Minuteman Senior Services' care management staff and local agencies and current participants.  In collaboration with the Nutrition Services Volunteer Coordinator, work with existing community groups concerned with the interests of the elderly to promote active and healthy aging such as the local Council on Aging, local social service agencies, municipal government, nursing homes, and senior groups.  Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers, employees, and Meals on Wheels drivers (from among dining participants and the community at large) to ensure an enduring program.  Train and supervise volunteers and/or paid Meals on Wheels drivers regarding routes (the Dining Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the timely delivery of meals). Responsible for updating route sheets, scheduling volunteer MOW drivers, and monthly calendars.  Implement and maintain food handling practices and procedures for dining and Meals on Wheels that adhere to agency standards and local fire, health, sanitation, and safety codes.  Keep required records and statistics and supervise the counting of cash and check receipts. Make daily deposits of donations in agency bank, mail weekly pink sheet, and deposit receipts to agency on Friday. Mail monthly and N.A.P.I.S. reports to agency by the 10th day of the following month.  Wear Minuteman uniform at all times, including the Minuteman apron.  Attend staff meetings and appropriate training sessions.  Display a consistently positive, cooperative, self-motivated, courteous, and professional attitude while working as a team member and pitching in as necessary.  Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Nutrition Services. QUALIFICATIONS:  High School graduate or equivalent in work/life experience in community or social group work (paid or volunteer)  Sensitivity to the needs of the elderly  Familiarity with the service area preferred  Must be able to lift bags/coolers weighing a maximum of 35 lbs  Ability to establish a good working relationship with participants, volunteers, and co-workers and must be detail oriented.
