I’d like to begin this week with a huge thank you to the Maynard Music Association for setting up and holding the annual Casino Night at the Maynard Elks this past Saturday night. The greater Maynard community came out in force to support this wonderful event and many thousands of Dollars were raised to support the music programs in the Maynard Public Schools.
Our new science teacher began this week and we are pleased to welcome her. Dr. Valerie Cairns is off to a great start and is very excited to join the MHS team. (I had introduced Dr. Cairns under her maiden name a few days ago which is what she had been using up until now.) I look forward to working with her and I expect that our students will have a productive and positive year of learning with her.
The second quarter of the academic year has begun and we are currently completing all grading inputs and crosschecking of grades for the 1st marking period. We expect grades be available through iPass next week.
Parent teacher conferences will be held on Monday evening November 23rd and Tuesday afternoon November 24th. Directions on how to sign up for parent teacher meetings will be sent out separately by next Wednesday November 18th.
Congratulations are due to our girls and boys soccer teams both of which qualified for the state tournament as league champions, won their first round games and then went down in very close games this past Wednesday night.
Some noteworthy MHS events, announcements and dates follow:
Forum on Teen Dating Violence and Ending Relationships
On Tuesday evening November 17th at 6:00 pm Maynard High School will be hosting a forum on Healthy Teen Relationships. Included in this presentation will be difficult topics around dating violence and issues related to ending relationships as teens.
This is an essential presentation on the critical topic of safety for teens in our community and it is designed for both parents and their teens.
Our presenter for the evening is Malcolm Astley.
Mr. Astley is currently finishing out his term as a School Committee member in Wayland and has tragic experience with this topic.
As you may recall from media coverage, the Mr. Astley and his family lost his daughter Lauren to violence related to ending a relationship in 2011. Since that time Mr. Astley has worked tirelessly on the topic of healthy teen relationships.
His presentation includes videos, useful information and a question and answer period. I urge you to check thewebsite LaurenDunneAstleyMemorialFund.org for more information.
I hope to see you on November 17th.
School Safety Community Meeting November 19th
On Thursday evening November 19th at 7:00pm there will be a presentation related to the ALICE system of safety protocols being considered for implementation in the Maynard Public Schools. This will be part of the regularly scheduled School Committee meeting and will be held at the Fowler School. More detailed information through the Superintendent’s blog and a letter will be forthcoming. Please look for this critical information over the next few days.
Calling all pianists!
The HS is looking for a choral accompanist for its high school choruses. The choral groups meet Monday-Friday, 2:15-3pm during the school year. They perform a wide variety of literature requiring the accompanist to be comfortable playing classical, renaissance, jazz, spirituals, musicals and pop literature.
The stipend is $3,000 for the year.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys playing with young adults, and our students are wonderful!
Please contact Mrs. Blanchard at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested. Please feel free to pass this along to folks in town that you may know who might be interested. We hope to interview the 3rd week of October
That’s it for now.
Have a great weekend—
Principal of Maynard High School
