People, places and things. (Things like Schedules & Cookouts!)

posted Aug 10, 2012, 1:29 PM by Chuck Caragianes

The summer continues to move along rapidly with many developments here at Maynard High School.

We are into scheduling season and I understanding thoughts are turning to exact information regarding classes for the coming school year.  As of this afternoon approximately 2/3’s of all student schedules have been individually reviewed.  The access portal to IPASS for students and parents has been opened to allow for viewing of schedules.  Please be aware of the following, it is very important should you view a schedule:  Work is continuing on student schedules this weekend and into Monday. These are tentative schedules—teacher assignments could change as we balance student loads for the sake of staff fairness, and some student schedules have not been reviewed so if your student’s schedule does not seem right please wait until Monday August 13th at 3:00 pm and check the schedule again before calling or emailing the school with requests for review or changes.    So that you know, guidance counselors will be in on August 21st to adjust student schedules as well as the two days, August 27th & 28th, prior to students starting their year on the 29th.

Student events are also fast approaching.  On Tuesday August 21st from 3:00 to 7:00 pm a freshmen informational session and cookout will be held at Maynard High School.  Students and parents will have an opportunity to learn about our new IPAD initiative, learn about our new freshmen mentoring program, meet with upperclassmen, take tours of the building, ask questions, meet with their guidance counselors and enjoy a relaxed cookout.  We look forward to seeing as many freshmen and their parents and guardians as possible!

On another front, I am pleased to announce that a new history teacher will be joining us this coming year.  Mr. Jeffrey Paterno has 12 years experience in the Somerville Public Schools as a history teacher, has been a lead teacher for freshmen at Somerville High, and has led the Somerville varsity track team as head coach among his many experiences in education.  We are very fortunate to have Jeff joining our team at Maynard High School.  Welcome to the MHS family, Jeff!

This past week has seen the Tiger Drive entrance closest to alumni field closed for several days.  This has been to allow for water, sewer, and gas line work to proceed for the new Maynard High School.  This section of Tiger Drive will be repaved next week and access and parking will be available for the start of school.  As of this writing 40% of the total building project is now complete with the new building expected to be completely weather tight by Thanksgiving with work then proceeding rapidly on the interior from there on.  The project remains on time and on budget thanks to the work of hundreds of dedicated people.

That’s it for this week—please continues to look for much more information over the next 19 days as we prepare for the first day of school on August 29th!

Take care and continue to enjoy the summer--
