Telethon Time!

Good afternoon,

The WAVM/Beacon telethon begins this evening and runs through Sunday December 11th.  This tremendous, annual, community event raises thousands of dollars, last year more than $40,000, to support area families in need.  We broke through the one million dollar barrier in the history of the event  last year and it’s time to start building toward two million!

This past Wednesday night our fall athletes were acknowledged at our Fall Sports Awards Ceremony with over 150 student-athletes from grades 7-12 participating supported by a tremendous group of parents friends and family.  The auditorium was nicely filled indeed.  Mr. Caruso noted the dozens upon dozens of student-athletes who attained High Honor Roll, Honor Roll and Honorable Mention status for the first grading quarter of the year.  Though our teams and athletes were hugely successful in competition this past fall, the academic success and achievement of our students outshines even the enormous successes on the field.

Winter sports practices have begun.  Though it is late in the sign-up and tryout process a student should see Mr. Caruso if he or she is interested in a winter sport.  Also remember, it’s also never too late for a student to join a non-sports club or activity as well.

The news for week of 12/2 contains a special live shoot from alumni field--since the studio has been closed due to a typhoon, otherwise known as the Beacon Telethon--featuring Caitlin, Alex, and Dante.  Caitlin has updates on after-school programs and more, Alex talks us through the sorrows of a Superbowl loss, and Dante demonstrates a stunning photo of the week, submitted by Dani.

From Superintendent Gerardi Regarding Inclement Weather

Snow Days /Delayed Openings/Early Emergency Dismissals

The forecast for this weekend may include some snow.  Inevitably, school cancellations are a reality in New England.  To prepare for the potential of a school cancellation due to inclement weather, I wanted to share the process on this blog for students and parents.

School Closing

In the event that school is canceled or delayed due to inclement weather or any other reason, the Maynard Public Schools will provide notice for parents and students via the following:

1. An automated phone call to each home between 6:00-6:30 a.m. or in rare instances, the evening before. This phone call is based on the home phone number provided on the student‘s emergency contacts form filled out at the beginning of the year and the phone numbers in iParent. Parents need to be sure their child‘s school has the correct phone and email contact information.

2. Traditional television and radio Media.  We use only WBZ TV – Channel 4 and Radio 1030AM (WBZ) 44.  They also post this information on their website at:

Please do not call the Fire or Police Department for School Information. DO NOT CALL "911".

Delayed Opening

In the event of a delayed opening, school will open two (2) hours after the regular starting time. School will be dismissed at the usual time on delayed opening days. If there is a delayed opening, no breakfast will be served on those days. Occasionally a delayed opening will be later revised to a no school announcement if conditions worsen. Please stay tuned to the TV or radio for a possible cancellation notice after a delayed opening announcement or listen for the town whistle.

Musical Notes

Our annual Winter Concert is coming up on Wednesday night December 14th at 7:00pm and our Jazz and Wind Ensembles will follow with a concert of their own on Thursday night December 22nd also at 7:00pm.  Check out both great musical events if you have the chance.

Meanwhile, our madrigal group has been asked to sing at the Providence Bruins vs. Hershey Bears game on Friday night January 27th.  The puck drops at 7:05pm.  You may want to take your sleigh down to Providence and be in the building by 6:45pm or so to support our singers and have an enjoyable evening on a winter’s night.


The Maynard Education Foundation (MEF) is an independent, non-profit organization that uses its philanthropic contributions to enhance educational excellence in the Maynard Public Schools by funding ideas and projects which promote and celebrate academic rigor and achievement, excitement about learning, and innovation in instruction.

MEF is seeking a Treasurer to join the Board of Trustees. The Treasurer works closely with the MEF President and Clerk to oversee MEF’s annual operations and activities. The Treasurer’s primary responsibility is the financial management of the organization.

The ideal candidate is detail oriented, has experience or an interest in financial management, and is willing to actively participate on a fun and dynamic board!

MMA December Update

1. Casino Night:

This year's Casino Night was a remarkable success! over $13,000 was made to support the music programs of Fowler and MHS. Support from over 50 volunteers including students, parents, administration, MMA parent alum, community and local business volunteers made for a memorable evening at the Elks. Please consider joining us at our monthly meetings to determine how our fundraising dollars will be used over the year!

2. December Meeting change:

MMA December meeting will be held on Thursday, December 8th from 6-7 pm at 13 Sherman Street. The change is due to the conflict with the sports ceremony on 12/7. We will review Casino Night, discuss needs for all concerts (Fowler and MHS) and our Disney donation.

Our next meeting is back to the regular schedule: 1/4/17 at 7pm (Fowler), 7:30 (Fowler/MHS), MHS (8pm) at the Fowler Library! Please join us in planning for the spring!

3. Kudos:  Deadline is Friday, December 9th!!

Tis the season to purchase a Kudos for your musician that will be printed in the music program insert throughout the concert series beginning with the December concerts through the May concerts.

Writing  KUDOS for the program is a way for parents, guardians or families to celebrate the musical accomplishments of their young musician(s). Examples include personal well-wishes, supportive statements about musical achievements and/or quotations.

This year you will have the following options:

1. one line (30 characters & spaces per line) for $10

2. two lines  - $20

checks are made payable to MMA

Drop off to the MHS office

4. Concert Needs: MHS concert on 12/14.

We are in need of baked goods and small water bottles for the MHS concert on Wednesday, December 14th.

Attire: Information on attire for both Fowler and MHS concerts has been distributed by the music staff!

5. Fowler MMA Co-chairs & Secretary needed. HS music banquet coordinator needed:

We are in need of a Secretary and two co-chairs for the Fowler to keep up support of music at this level. Please consider giving an hour or so once a month to advocate for the needs of this program if your child is in the band at Fowler!

We need a handful of music parents from grades 9-11 to coordinate the annual music banquet held on Memorial Day at 5:30 pm. There are big and small jobs to be done but presently we have one volunteer. Many hands make light work and planning should begin in January!

NEW! Maynard High School Food Pantry

The following message comes to us from the Maynard Food Pantry:

Dear parents,

The Maynard High School and The Maynard Food Pantry have come together to offer a food pantry within the Maynard High School. The goal is to supplement weekend meals for high school students and their families throughout the school year.

After students sign up they may come to the pantry, located in a quieter section of the school, at anytime during the week while school is in session.

Food choices will be in four main categories of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack.

Typical food choices are:

●     Hot and Cold Cereal & pancake mix

●     Soups & canned pasta meals

●     mac & cheese

●     Canned tuna

●     canned fruit

●     snack bars

●     personal care items

If you feel this program will benefit your high school student(s) please sign up in one of the following ways.
