Thank You To Laurie Edgar and the Students of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School

posted Jun 1, 2018, 9:52 AM by Chuck Caragianes

Good afternoon,

This past Wednesday morning we were extremely fortunate to host former Maynard High School teacher, and current Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teacher, Laurie Edgar and three of her students from Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida to our school.

A thoughtful presentation and discussion with our dozens of our own MHS student leaders was held for approximately 90 minutes in the auditorium and issues related to school safety including mental health supports, school hardening and safety procedures, and the state of gun laws around the nation were all addressed at length and at a level of thoughtful discourse that was exemplary and inspiring to all in attendance including Superintendent Gerardi and Assistant Superintendent Gaudette.

The Douglas students along with Mrs. Edgar were a model of what civic discourse and civic activism should look like within a well functioning democracy.

It is impossible for me to thank Mrs. Edgar and her three students enough for their visit and MHS teacher Jean LaBelle for facilitating the event and being instrumental in making it happen.

The calendar now says June and the end of the year is but 3 weeks away.  The end of the year is actually a quite robust academic portion of the year and student attendance and attentiveness to their school work is essential right through the last school day on June 21st.

Freshmen will be taking their Science MCAS tests on June 6th and 7th.  Passing the Science MCAS Test is a statewide graduation requirement. All freshmen students should be to school on time after a good night’s sleep and healthy breakfast to help ensure a successful result.

Our seniors have completed their academic year and their teachers are now completing the grading process for the year for our soon to be graduates.

Senior Awards Night will be held Wednesday June 6th at 7:00pm in our gymnasium, and our Graduation ceremonies will be held Friday evening June 8th at 6:30pm at Alumni Field (weather permitting).  In the event of inclement weather, or a forecast of inclement weather, Graduation ceremonies will be held on the same date and time in the high school gymnasium.

In closing this section of News & Notes this week I’d like to share the following email from Doug Barth this week and would like to share it with you as yet another example of the great work and projects our students take on:

I’m the Board president of the MetroWest Free Medical Program, based in Sudbury.  In the past year, we’ve been so fortunate to have been embraced by your National Honor Society (notably Nora McCarthy), who have provided us a wonderful stream of volunteers, who help us set-up the weekly clinic.

And just yesterday we were contacted by Olivia Palmer, who informed us that at a “Battle of the Bands” event $300 was raised to support our clinic.

Please accept our gratitude, and I hope you find a way to acknowledge this tremendous group of students.

Best regards,

Doug Barth

The seniors produced and directed this final episode, where they say farewell to their peers, pass their segments on to the next generation, and say their final goodbyes.

An emotional ending, as the seniors of MHN Season 3 are finished with their roles on the newscast.

But don't worry, we still have episodes to come, as the juniors take over and finish season 3 strong.  Let us know if you have any announcements you would like to see on the news!
