The End of the First Quarter is in Sight

Good afternoon—

It has been an excellent week at Maynard High School.  PSAT testing was held on Wednesday for Juniors and those Sophomores that signed up on a first come, first served basis.  Next Wednesday a randomly selected group of 40 sophomores will be participating in the international PISA test.  This is the test that is used to measure national progress in education in comparison to other nations.  The Commonwealth of Massachusetts voluntarily uses state data to determine where the public school children of Massachusetts rank against the world if Massachusetts were viewed as a separate “nation.”  The last time the PISA test was given nearly three years ago Massachusetts would have ranked within the top 5 of all nations in the world in every test category.  This is a tribute to the system of public education in Massachusetts and I expect that our own students will contribute to another strong ranking this year.  The designated students and their families have been informed.

As a reminder, the last day of the first marking is November 10th.  Please continue to work with your children to help ensure they have the best possible grades they can earn.  Should your student need extra support, homework club is open Monday through Thursday from the close of school until 3:00pm and our teaching staff is easily and broadly accessible for extra help.

As you know, attendance has been a point of emphasis this year and continues to be excellent.  The single factor that most strongly correlates with strong student academic performance is excellent school attendance.  Please continue to strive to have your student to school and on time each and every day (I advise a 7:30am arrival).

A number of noteworthy MHS events, announcements and dates follow:

School Safety Community Meeting

On Thursday evening November 19th at 7:00pm there will be a presentation related to the ALICE system of safety protocols being considered for implementation in the Maynard Public Schools.  This will be part of the regularly scheduled School Committee meeting and will be held at the Fowler School.  More detailed information through the Superintendent’s blog and a letter will be forthcoming.  Please look for this critical information over the next few days.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

The Office of State Representative and the Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren are hosting an informational event at the Hudson Senior Center on October 23rd from 10:30-12pm.

The groundbreaking Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren was created in 2008, as part of the Child Advocate bill. The Commission’s primary purpose is to serve as a resource to the Commonwealth on issues affecting grandparents raising grandchildren.

Oftentimes, grandparents who are raising their grandchildren face many challenges: including legal questions, financial assistance, and the need for emotional support.

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Informational Event will include:

· Rep. Kate Hogan- Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health, Chair of the Legislature’s Elder  Caucus, and strong supporter of the Grandparents Raising  Grandchildren Commission .
· Former Rep. John Lepper- Chair of the Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, and grandparent.
· Lynn Girton- Vice Chair of the Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising  Grandchildren, grand parent, and former chief counsel for the Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Boston Bar  will discuss 
legal options grandparents face. 
· Margo Chevers- Commissioner and grandparent will explain what it takes to run a successful support group for grandparents raising grandchildren.

SEPAC

11/2/15: Basic Rights in Special Education: A Workshop for Parents and Professionals 

To help you learn how to be an effective partner with your child's school when evaluating your child's eligibility for Special Education, and for guidance on how to plan, make decisions, and monitor your child's progress, the Acton-Boxborough, Maynard, and Sudbury SEPACs, in collaboration with the Federation for Children with Special Needs, present the Basic Rights in Special Education Workshop. 

Navigating the paperwork and meetings involved with having a child in Special Education can be confusing. Knowing your rights is the best way to ensure your child receives the best placement possible. Please join us for this special workshop on Monday, November 2nd from 7-9 pm at the RJ Grey Junior High Library, 16 Charter Road, Acton. Contact

Thank You to the Class of 1965!

As part of their 50th reunion celebration the class of 1965 (the first graduating class from our previous building) toured the new building this past Saturday led by student guides arranged through guidance counselor Renee Muise.  After taking the tour the class members, led by Joe Mullen, spontaneously "passed the hat" and raised $200.00 for a contribution to the MHS Scholarship fund.  Many thanks go out to this group and here’s hoping other graduating classes see this as an inspiration to follow suit!

 

Calling all pianists!

The HS is looking for a choral accompanist for its high school choruses. The choral groups meet Monday-Friday, 2:15-3pm during the school year. They perform a wide variety of literature requiring the accompanist to be comfortable playing classical, renaissance, jazz, spirituals, musicals and pop literature.

The stipend is $3,000 for the year.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys playing with young adults,  and our students are wonderful!

Just in time for Halloween on October 29th join with Tiffany Rice for an evening with a Spirit Medium!  The readings begin at 6:30 and run to 8:30 right here at Maynard High School.  Light Refreshments will be served.  Tickets are available for $40 per person through Courtney Lawton at lawtonc12@hotmail.com  Spaces are limited.

Though there may not be time for everyone to have an individual reading, you’ll certainly receive an evening of great entertainment while benefitting a student group preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Cuba.

Ava Anderson Non Toxic

Courtney Lawton is an MHS parent and an independent salesperson for Ava Anderson Non Toxic, a company that makes only non-toxic products for the home, car, body, and pet care.  She will donate 20% of all sales from this fundraiser to the MHS group that will travel to Cuba this April.

Clear the Clutter

The MHS students who will be traveling to Cuba this spring have a fund raiser going on that you can help with (and it may help you)!  If you have things at your house you'd like to get rid of, drop them off at the MHS parking lot on Oct. 17 between 9:00 and 2:00.  Students and chaperons will be there collecting donations for which we will be able to receive money.  Accepted items include clothing, shoes, accessories, small electronics, books, and  small household items.  (No furniture, please)  If you have any questions, or would like items picked up at your house, please call, text or email cubafund@verizon.net or 781-718-5098.

Vouchers are now available for the annual Casino Night sponsored by the Maynard Music Association. Casino Night will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Maynard Elks from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Vouchers are $40 apiece, $35 for two or more, and $45 the day of the event. The price includes $3000 in gaming chips for the night! Last year’s event was sold out! This year’s event will feature a live auction for a 7 night two-bedroom resort stay valued at up to $2000, four one day Disney Park Hopper Passes, a 20 person Pool Party at Jillian's of Boston, and a 60 minute plane ride with local pilot, Tom Hesbach! The Maynard Music Association supports band and chorus programs at Maynard High School and Fowler Middle School. The proceeds from this fundraiser contribute to scholarships, instrument purchases and repair, choral music and offset other miscellaneous music-related expenses. Vouchers can be purchased at the Fowler main office or by contacting Bonnie Wilson at 978-897-7045. It’s a Show!

The Concord Band (an adult, award winning high level band) will be performing "Mystical Moments" at its fall concert at 51 Walden St. in Concord on Saturday, October 24th at 8pm.

Usually the tickets are about $25, but they have decided to have this concert offered for FREE!!! (Donations gratefully accepted.)

The music is amazing-"The Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Incantation and Dance" and "Carmina Burana" among others. Many members of the Maynard community will be playing in this concert including Mrs. Blanchard on trumpet, after school lesson teachers Mrs. Bundy (flute), Mr. Vabulas (clarinet and arranged one of the pieces!), Mr. Broggi (percussion), and several folks from town. This is a great night out for the adults as well as a great concert experience for HS and JH serious musicians and their families.  The members of the Concord Band hope you can come and enjoy!
