The First Quarter Comes to an End

Good afternoon,

This past Friday marked the end of the first quarter of the school year.  Teachers will be finalizing grades over the next two days and they will be available in IPASS in the coming week after final reconciliation and cross checking is complete.  Coupled with the clocks rolling back this past weekend and our fall sports teams beginning their tournament action with a football victory, Go Tigers!,  there is no doubt that Thanksgiving and the winter season are now on the horizon.

Friday, our students met in elective advisory periods for one class period and the enthusiasm of students and staff alike was fantastic.  Take a moment to ask your student about how their advisory group went when they get home today.  I think you’ll find it a great conversation.

On a related note, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday afternoon November 16th from 2:15-3:30pm and Thursday night November 17th from 6:30-8:00pm.

To schedule meetings with your students’ teachers, please these steps and guidelines:  1.  To allow reasonable access to teachers by all parents and guardians, please request no more than three teacher appointments.  Should you feel meeting with more than three of your childrens’ teachers is important, additional individual appointments can be made through a guidance counselor.  2. To make your requests please email our secretary Pam Carter.  Please include your name, your student’s name, the teachers/classes you would like to visit and the preferred day and rough time.  Pam’s email address is  Pam will send a confirmatory email to you in response giving you precise meeting details.  3.  Requests for appointments will be taken starting now on November 7th and extend through Sunday November 13th.  4. Your email requests will be handled in the order they are received.  5.  Please do not phone for appointments unless you experience difficulty with email.

A Grant Highlight With Thanks To The MEF:

MHS Teacher Rita Murphy Attends "Education in Ireland" Summer Program

Thanks in part to a grant from MEF, 8th grade teacher Rita Murphy attended a summer program at the National University of Galway that included a review and analysis of the Irish educational system, its origins, development, structure and organization. The program included elementary, secondary curriculum and assessment, adult learning professional development, special education, and career and technical training.

Maynard High School students are benefiting from Ms. Murphy's participation in the program.

Based on her experience Ms. Murphy is currently creating new lessons for her students, including a presentation about world history. In addition, she has shared materials from the University of Galway's Mathematics, Design and Communications Graphics, Spanish and French exit exams with different departments at MHS.

"I am taking various problems from the Mathematics tests and including them in my curriculum as practice problems for the MCAS. I am hoping by incorporating the various level of problems from the Mathematics Exit Exam, our students will be better prepared for MCAS, PSATs and SATs."

The MEF (Maynard Educational Foundation) continues to support our teachers and students most generously and many thanks are extended by the entire high school community.

There will be no SEPAC meeting in November (due to the conflict with Election Day), but please save the date on your calendars now: The SEPAC Winter Social will be Tuesday, December 6! More information coming soon.

The Maynard Education Foundation (MEF) is an independent, non-profit organization that uses its philanthropic contributions to enhance educational excellence in the Maynard Public Schools by funding ideas and projects which promote and celebrate academic rigor and achievement, excitement about learning, and innovation in instruction.

MEF is seeking a Treasurer to join the Board of Trustees. The Treasurer works closely with the MEF President and Clerk to oversee MEF’s annual operations and activities. The Treasurer’s primary responsibility is the financial management of the organization.

The ideal candidate is detail oriented, has experience or an interest in financial management, and is willing to actively participate on a fun and dynamic board!

Sew What?

Do you have a used sewing machine lurking in your basement or attic? The Sewing Advisory at Maynard High School is looking for donations of sewing machines and sewing notions (thread, needles, etc.) for high school students who are learning to sew. Any donations can be dropped off at the front office of the High School. Thank-you!!

Fall Musical Showcase featuring the MHS Jazz Band & Wind Ensemble

Join us tonight on Friday November 4th for the Fall Showcase concert featuring the MHS Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble. Selections will include, Eric Whitacre's "October" and the funky rock chart "Cut to the Chase". Concert starts at 6:00pm in the MHS auditorium, all are welcome to attend!

MMA's Casino Night Fundraiser Update

Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 19th at the Maynard Elks. Our annual fundraiser is in its 8th year and raises over $10,000 each year toward supporting the music needs for band and chorus at Maynard High and Fowler School.

Volunteers are needed: Volunteers are need on the day of the event for set-up and during the event. Please consider volunteering 1 hour or more of your time to help support this fundraiser.

NEW! Maynard High School Food Pantry

The following message comes to us from the Maynard Food Pantry:

Dear parents,

The Maynard High School and The Maynard Food Pantry have come together to offer a food pantry within the Maynard High School. The goal is to supplement weekend meals for high school students and their families throughout the school year.

After students sign up they may come to the pantry, located in a quieter section of the school, at anytime during the week while school is in session.

Food choices will be in four main categories of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack.

Typical food choices are:

●     Hot and Cold Cereal & pancake mix

●     Soups & canned pasta meals

●     mac & cheese

●     Canned tuna

●     canned fruit

●     snack bars

●     personal care items
