The First Quarter Draws to a Close as we Welcome Our New NHS Members!

posted Nov 3, 2017, 12:05 PM by Chuck Caragianes

Good afternoon,

First, news that will be on everyone’s mind given the time of year.

The end of the first marking quarter of the year has arrived as of today, Friday November 3rd.  Teachers will be preparing and entering final grades over the next few days and then the data entries will be cross checked.  We anticipate releasing grades to parents no later than Friday November 10th.

Save the Dates!  Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday November 15th from 2:15-3:30 pm and the evening of Thursday November 16th from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Details about how to sign up for Parent-Teacher conferences will be sent out by next Wednesday afternoon at the latest in an email dedicated to that topic alone.

And now some great new about our students and upcoming activities at MHS.

Our National Honor Society induction ceremony was held this past Wednesday night as 20 students joined 18 of their peers as NHS members.  It was a lovely ceremony to celebrate the tremendous achievements of these young women and men in the areas of academics, character, service and leadership.  Though many people realize students in National Honor Society are outstanding students academically, it is less well known that they must demonstrate an equal or greater level of achievement in all three of the additional areas I mentioned and do so without any averaging of the categories.

Many thanks go to our faculty advisors Sandi LeBlanc and Emily Dowd for their efforts working with the students and arranging for the ceremony and to our Keynote Speaker Erin Bradley, herself a Maynard High School graduate, National Honor Society Member and former MHS teacher, for her insightful and uplifting talk.

Next week 9th, 11th & 12th grade students will be receiving training in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation  and on AED (Automated External Defibrillators).  Thanks go out to Robert Schriever of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association and his team for facilitating this training.  Our current 10th graders received this training last year and it was effective and well received.  Our goal is to have a fully trained community by the end of next week with future trainings happening to start each year for incoming 9th graders and any newly enrolled students.  These life saving techniques are of enormous value, and all of our students will be empowered to make a real difference should an emergency situation arise.

A Message from Whitsons, Our Food Service Provider

As school food service provider your opinions are very important to us and can help us determine how we can improve our services. With this in mind we have put together a quick school nutrition survey with the hope of receiving feedback from parents, students and faculty. The link provided below will take you to the survey and QR Code flyers will be set up in each cafeteria as well.

The survey will remain up until 11/15. Whitsons does not manage the data collection or manage results for customized surveys.

Notice of Roadway Construction

Beginning on Monday, October 30th the Great Road (Rt. 117) will be undergoing roadway construction between Summer Hill Road to Sherman Street.  This construction is planned for completion in approximately one week.

The east entrance of Tiger Drive is not in the construction zone and will remain open throughout the roadway construction on the Great Road (Rt.117).  The west entrance of Tiger Drive and the Crowe Park entrance will experience some shut downs and detours.  Police details will be at the construction areas to help with traffic.

News From the Studios of WAVM & Mr. Ogden’s Class

Fantastic news!  This year students in Mr. Ogden's television and radio broadcast classes made this (Click on) unboxing video, to show appreciation for a new Mac computer that has been added to the WAVM classroom.  The video, which stars Charlie Fitzsimmons and Joel Stenhouse, was edited by Justin Wilkins, with Max Bakalos working camera and lights.

Executives at Apple saw the video online and were so impressed they decided to donate over $5,000.00 worth of professional television production apps to all of the students at Maynard High School.  The apps donated were Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X, Motion, Compressor, and Mainstage.

Thank you to Apple, and well done to the four young men who made the video.  With this valuable and generous donation, we can all hope to see students from MHS on the big screen someday.
