WAVM Rules the Airwaves!

posted Dec 11, 2015, 4:25 PM by Chuck Caragianes

Good afternoon—

It’s here—The WAVM Beacon Santa Telethon.  Help us as we look to break the One Million Dollar mark over the history of this great event.  Students and staff have been working hard to get ready, will be sleeping in shifts at MHS (supervised of course), and will be lighting up the airwaves once again this year from Friday night through Sunday afternoon.  Please tune in and contribute if you can.

Our Financial Aid Night was a huge success this past Tuesday night with well over 50 parents and students attending to gain insight, advice and assistance as they prepare to navigate the challenges associated with financing a college education.  Many thanks go out to all of our Guidance Counselors—Lisa MacLean, Renee Muise and Chris Devine.

On Wednesday night our auditorium was packed as we enjoyed our annual Holiday Concert.  Vocal ensembles, our Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble and Concert Band all performed wonderfully.  Mrs. Blanchard and Ms. Gately are to be commended for their dedicated work with over 150 students and I’d like to also thank the Maynard Music Association (MMA) for all of their hard work behind the scenes.

Upcoming events follow:

Beacon Santa Telethon

The WAVM Telethon (which raises money for the Beacon Santa Fund) will be held at Maynard High School on December 11-15, and once again the students are in need of donated items for their on-air auction. Donations of toys, games, furniture, electronics, books, household items, holiday decorations as well as tickets to a show, concert or a sporting event, gift certificates or a provided service are all most welcome. Gift baskets donated by your family, neighborhood or club are also a great way to help the auction.

This year is special in two ways. It is the 50th anniversary of the student-run telethon.  Plus, they are very close to reaching one million dollars raised for the Beacon Santa Fund.  Wouldn’t it be great if this happened on their anniversary!

Items are being collected at Maynard High School during school hours and throughout the weekend of the telethon. The WAVM students will also be happy to pick up your donation at your home. Please call the station at 978-897-5213 for assistance.

All donations are gratefully accepted but regret that we can only accept new items.

Free Screening of "Codegirl" at Fine Arts Theatre, Sponsored by Yieldbot, Monday, December 14th

As you are likely aware, women currently make up a small proportion of those working in various fields of technology including software & App design.  On Monday December 14th The Fine Arts Theater Place is showing “CODEGIRL” free to public.  This acclaimed documentary follows girls and young women as they compete in an “APP Competition” just last year.  It’s time to put the myth that girls and women can’t do math and science as well as men to rest once and for all and “CODEGIRL” is a great vehicle to document this point.

I urge you to check out the link below and consider attending this terrific offering.

Basketball & Toys for Tots

Next Friday night, 12/18/15, the Basketball Program in Partnership with the Maynard Police, will be sponsoring a "Toys for Tots" game as our Tigers faceoff against Littleton. Donate a toy at admission and you will receive a discounted entry for $3. Senior citizens and non-Maynard students will receive a discounted entry for $1.

That’s it for now.

Have a great weekend--

Chuck Caragianes

Principal of Maynard High School
