We'd Love to Hear From You: Take Our Survey!

posted Oct 14, 2016, 9:26 AM by Chuck Caragianes

Good afternoon,

In an effort to improve communication across the district one of our faculty members, Jean LaBelle, is taking the lead on researching communications issues for the district and using the information she gathers to formulate next steps and plans for improvements.

Please click on the link below and help us by taking a survey to help us generate the information we need to be more effective.  We have tried getting this link out by other means through our central office, but thus far response has been very limited.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could take a minute or two to complete the survey to help us serve you better.  Many thanks in advance.

Though in some respects it feels like the school year has just started, it’s time to note that the end of the first marking quarter of the year is approaching.  The term will be ending on Friday November 4th with report cards due out by the end of the following week.  Have a chat with your student about finishing the quarter well.  Its an important topic and a good first quarter tends to greatly reduce a student’s stress level for the remainder of the year.

Some additional information about upcoming activities and information follows:

In an effort to improve collaboration between the school department and the larger community, the school department will annually establish a school/community task force to address critical issues in the Maynard Public School System.  Serving as an advisory branch of the Curriculum Sub Committee, these groups will meet regularly to work on defined projects and provide research and guidance to the Curriculum Committee and School Committee as a whole.  For the 2016-2017 school year we will be launching five such groups.  Those interested should sign up here.  Information about each group is below:

SOS: Get Into the Act School Program

Maynard High School takes the well being of our students very seriously, and to that end we are pleased to be able to offer programming designed to help our students be proactive and aware of the signs and nature of depression and how to be effective partners in suicide prevention.

I would like to thank our School Nurse Pat Trahman for making this program possible.

The following letter explains the program in greater detail and provides information on an "Opt Out" provision should you not wish your student to participate.

October 12, 2016

Dear Parent or Guardian,

The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions-difficult for youths, their parents and educators.  It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age.  Depression-which is treatable-is a leading risk factor for suicide.

To proactively address this issue, Maynard High School is offering a depression and suicide awareness training for eighth and eleventh grade students.  This program is supported by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) a highly regarded non-profit organization and has been used by thousands of schools nationwide since 2000. It is the 2nd year that MHS is using this program with our students. We are implementing the program early in the school year so that students may benefit from additional support during this transitional year if needed.

The program addresses youth depression in an age appropriate manner encouraging students to Get Into the ACT by Acknowledging a person’s feelings and Caring enough to Tell an adult about their concern. On Wednesday, October 26, 2016 eighth and eleventh grade students will be presented with this program. Students will watch a DVD, have group discussions and then each student will complete a screening questionnaire. If any student is found to be at high risk, parents/guardians will be contacted, the student will meet with a counselor and follow up recommendations will be made.

If you DO NOT wish your child to participate in the SOS: Get Into the Act School Program, please return the slip below to the school nurse. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that your child has permission to participate in this program.

If you have any further questions and/or would like to view the video in advance please contact:  Pat Trahman at ptrahman@maynard.k12.ma.us

Sincerely,

Chuck Caragianes, Principal       Pat Trahman, School Nurse
