Our Tiger Paws have been freshly painted on Tiger Drive celebrating our clubs, sports and students and the press box at Alumni Field has been redecorated (Thank you to the dozens of students who helped make this happen).
Teachers have been decorating and organizing their classrooms and I’ve heard numerous discussions about professional development conferences and classes that faculty members attended in July and August.
Many students are already back at MHS participating in sports, music and other activities.
This past Wednesday over 75% of our incoming 8th graders and scores of parents attended our annual 8th Grade Orientation and Cookout. Superintendent Gerardi and Assistant Superintendent Gaudet were also on hand as were over one third of our faculty including the entire 8th grade team. The entire event was only possible due to the participation of nearly 20 students from the Student Government and National Honor Society who acted as tour guides, Question & Answer panelists and facilitators. Sports information was available thanks to Mr. Caruso and Parent Bonnie Wilson was on hand to give out information related to the Maynard Music Association. Approximately 200 people participated in all which represents an unprecedented turnout nearly doubling the past attendance for this event. It was a great evening.
What all this can only mean is that summer break is coming to a close and it is getting to be time to start the 2016-2017 school year.
The first day of school is next Wednesday August 31st. Students should plan on arriving at MHS at 7:30am and they will report directly to the gymnasium at the time where they will receive their schedules and start their day. Activities in the gym will begin promptly at 7:45am which is the official start time of the school day. As I’ve written many times before, if you’re student is arriving at MHS or being dropped off at 7:45am they are late to school. Instruction begins promptly at 7:45 and being on the sidewalk or just getting to a locker is not the same as being in class where attendance has already been taken and class is already underway.
Next week our staff will be in starting on Monday including our guidance counselors Lisa MacLean, Renee Muise and newly hired Dana MacPhee.
Speaking of new hires we are happy to be welcoming Cori Sullivan as our new 8th grade History teacher, Johnna Little as our new Spanish teacher, Farwa Faisal as our new Science teacher, John Ogden as our new Digital Media and Radio & TV Production teacher (fear not, Mr. Minasian and the after school WAVM club and program are still with us), Maria Afonso-Goddard as our new ELL teacher, Danielle Bearden who is returning to us as a part time Math teacher, Sara Hazel who will be splitting her time between the high school and Fowler as a Physical Education teacher, Shana Macks who will be our regular building substitute teacher, and Sherry Trainque who is our new Special Education Team Chair. This is a dynamic and highly trained group of professionals who have the safety and education of your children at heart and as their top priorities at MHS. Welcome one and all!
And now for some upcoming events and information as we start our new school year:
High School Meet & Greet--This Monday we will be having our first ever high school Meet & Greet. This is a very informal opportunity for you to meet and chat for a moment or two with your student’s teachers. We will gather in the school cafeteria where some light refreshments of water, juice and cookies will be available. Our Meet and Greet will run from 1:45pm until 2:15pm. Back To School Night on Tuesday September 27th is when you’ll have a longer opportunity to hear from your student’s teachers about classes at MHS.
End of Summer Student Celebration--All students who participated in summer activities related to the high school music program, high school club activities or high school sports teams are invited to an end of summer celebration on Tuesday evening August 30th from 6:15-7:15pm on the back patio of Maynard High School. This is our 5th year of having our students jointly celebrate their summer activities and accomplishments within the MHS community. In days gone by each group might or might not have a separate pizza party to end the summer--we’ve found this joint event allows our students to support one another across the extra-curricular activities we offer at MHS and to build a real sense of community spirit.
Back to School Night--On Tuesday night September 27th we will be holding our annual Back to School Night from 6:00-8:00pm at MHS. This is a chance for you to gather information about parent groups at MHS and to run through your student’s schedule in an abbreviated format allowing you to meet your student’s teachers and learn a bit about each class.
Varsity Cross Country--A message from Mr. Caruso:
I am very excited to announce that Maynard High School will have a Varsity Cross Country program this fall. This sport will be open to boys and girls 7-12. All will participate.
Having a cross country program has been a goal of mine since I became the athletic director, but I wasn't able to do it. This year, Julie Berry, and a group of dedicated parents, were able to raise money to fund the program. A big thanks to Julie and that crew. I am excited for this moment and excited for the future of the program.
And perhaps members of our new Cross Country Team and many others will be interested in the following:

From Our Music Teacher Mrs. Blanchard:
Dear MHS Music Students and Families,
Welcome to the Music Department at Maynard High School! I'm so looking forward to the upcoming year-we have a lot to look forward to! After an amazing year, culminating in high gold for the chorus and platinum (near perfect score) for the band in the New England competition, this year will be just as exciting with our upcoming Disney trip in April! This note is to help you know where to navigate to find the resources you'll need through the year.
--for info on the Disney Trip (and we sure are looking forward to having everyone get to perform in Disney and learn at the Disney workshops-what a once in a lifetime experience!) go to the MHS website. Scroll down until you see a list of links. Click on "2017 Band/Chorus Disney Trip" and you'll find all the forms and info. you need.
--for general music information such as dates/calendar, uniform needs, lesson teachers (contact them quickly/early so you get a good time-they are beyond fabulous-we are SO lucky to have them come to MHS to teach our talented students!!), go to www.maynardmusic.org.
You can also find it via the MHS website, scroll down to the list of links, and you'll see Maynard Music Association.
--for leaders-officers and section leaders-please plan on attending the leadership meeting in the music room on Monday, August 29th, 2:30-3:45. Please also plan to attend the chorus orientation on Wed. if you're a chorus leader/officer.
--for students new to the HS band (8th grade and anyone new to the district), we will have orientation for you during band the first day
--for students new to the HS choruses (8th grade and anyone new to the district or who is in chorus for the first time this year), we will have orientation from 2:15-2:40 Wednesday, August 31st. (this will make sure all those in soccer can get to your scrimmages in time)
--for all music students, the bbq for music, sports and wavm is Tuesday, August 30th at 6:15 in the front patio. Please come and enjoy seeing your friends, meeting some new ones, and having a great bbq. There will be info available on the MMA (Maynard Music Association) table including calendars for the year, sweatshirt orders, etc.
Hope this is helpful to you all and hope that you enjoy the last weeks of summer. Get out those horns, sing at the top of your lungs, and get ready for a phenomenal year!
That’s a lot of information to start the year.
Thanks & take care--
Principal of Maynard High School
