Library Mission Statement

The mission of the Green Meadow Library is to develop and sustain a love of reading and learning in all students, to support and enhance the educational goals of the school curriculum, to maintain a varied and up-to-date collection of materials, to encourage independent and critical thinking, and to provide equal access to local and global resources.

Current Events in the Library

Third graders are participating in the "Adopt a Shelf" program! By the end of the school year, each third grader will be in charge of a shelf of books in our library. They will keep them organized and easily accessible. This gives students a chance to feel ownership of their library, practice their organizational skills, and become familiar with the library layout.

It's award season in the book world! We've been learning all about The Caldecott award; the judging process, and the history of the award. We've been very busy reading as many Caldecott and Caldecott Honor winners as possible, and we will soon find out which book won for best illustrations in 2018!

Be on the lookout for "Book Recommendations" around the library. Students have placed signs next to books they love, and have written book reviews to help other students find great books. We're also voting on a selection of new early reader graphic novel series to be included in the library collection. We're doing this to prepare for the upcoming book fair, which will be held between April 4 and April 13. Green Meadow students are excited to add a few new titles to the library!

Library Information

Library Classes:
Book Borrowing at Green Meadow:

  • Kindergarten and 1st grade students may check out one book.
  • 2nd grade students may check out one book. 
  • 3rd grade students may check out two books.
  • Spanish Immersion: 1st, 2nd & 3rd grade students may also choose a book written in Spanish.

The book check-out period is 2 weeks. Overdue notices will be sent to the student when a book becomes overdue. No money is due when an overdue notice is sent. If a book is not returned after 3 overdue notices have been sent, a letter will be sent home to the parent to alert them of the situation. If the book is lost or damaged, a student must pay for the book before they may check out a new book. If the book is later found and returned in good condition, the fine will be returned.

Kindergarten students keep their book in their classroom until Christmas vacation. After lessons on taking care of library books and having a special place to keep them, they may choose to bring their book home to share with family.

Book Fairs at Green Meadow:
Book fairs are held twice a year. The book fair in the fall at Back To School Curriculum Night is for parents only. The book fair in the spring is held for two weeks and all students come during their regularly scheduled class time. The book fair is also open during the Spring Open House and all are welcome. All profit from the book fair is used to purchase new books for the library.

If you can commit to 30 minutes or 1 hour of time once a week, the library would love to have you! Volunteers are needed to reshelve books, help children choose books during book check-out time, and help out at book fairs. It features a developmentally appropriate, visually graphic interface, a subject-based topic tree search and full-text, age-appropriate, curriculum-related magazine, newspaper and reference content for information on current events, the arts, science, health, people, government, history, sports and more.
The Dewey Decimal System

The Dewey Decimal System organizes information into 10 broad areas, which are broken into smaller and smaller topics. Different topics are assigned numbers, known as "call numbers".
The general topics:

In addition to Dewey, we also use the call numbers "E" for Everybody, "FIC" for Fiction, and "B" for Biography.
