Good afternoon, It has been a very busy day here at Maynard High School. Our students and staff executed a flawless emergency evacuation drill as we continue to take steps to ensure student safety through practice and rehearsal. This afternoon our students engaged in a variety of community service activities as part of their last advisory session of the year. Our National Honor Society students under the guidance of faculty advisors Emily Dowd and Sandi LeBlanc were instrumental in coordinating this entire activity. Throughout both the drill and the community service activities our students once again demonstrated their maturity and positive civic engagement. Last weekend our students put on an absolutely first rate production of the musical Godspell. Hats off to the student actors, tech crews, and band members who helped bring this show about not to mention the many adult volunteers who supported the production. Well done and many thanks to all! When students arrive next Monday morning June will have arrived and the end of the 2018-2019 school year will be but 2 weeks away. Excitement is building as our seniors have reached their last day class day and now are one week from graduation itself. The following list of senior related items will be of note for many: Senior Trips and Activities: Monday, June 3 - Harbor Cruise dinner and dance. The bus leaves MHS at 5:00PM Rehearsals, Awards and Graduation: Monday June 3 and Thursday June 6 - Graduation Rehearsals at 10:00AM June 5 - Senior Awards Night 7PM in the gym - Seniors should arrive to the cafeteria no later than 6:30 June 6 - Senior Graduate Walkthrough. 12:00pm. They are: June 4-5 - Science MCAS test for freshmen June 10 - Underclassmen Awards 9:45am June 10-13 - Underclassmen final exams. Click the link here for the final exam schedule. School Council The Maynard High School School Council is an advisory panel made up of parents, teachers, students, community members and administrators as a body that reviews school policies in all areas. The council is a state mandated body designed to gain information regarding the school and district and lend advice to school principals. The elected and appointed members serve two year terms. Due to laws governing confidentiality, concerns about individual students are not under the purview of the student council nor are individual personnel matters. Such concerns should be directed to the school administration directly. The public is invited to attend and observe meetings. Meetings are held in the high school Media Center from 2:30-4:00pm. The final meeting for this school year is on 6/13. Maynard Basketball Summer Camp Maynard's Varsity Head Coach Paul Howes will be running his Top 100 Basketball camp from June 17th- June 20th. A Message from Mike Horesh on a Chemistry Instruction Summer Opportunity I'm writing you as a science teacher of 15 years (currently at Lexington High School) to let you know that I am offering two, one-week chemistry prep classes at Nashoba Valley Technical High School this summer. The classes each run from 9am-3pm, Monday through Friday, for two sessions in August (week of the 5th and week of the 19th), and are specifically designed to prepare rising high school chemistry students for their academic year chemistry class. The program, through which the classes are being offered, is called Nashoba Valley Academic Prep (www.nvacademicprep.com) I have been teaching this chemistry prep class in Lexington, Waltham and Wellesley, several times per summer for six years now and have gotten truly fantasticfeedback, every year, without exception. By the end of the week of each class, we will have familiarized kids, at considerable depth, with roughly 25-30% of the curriculum that they will be starting in the fall, providing them with a binder full of reference material, resources and activities, as well as a level of confidence and familiarity with the material that kids are, otherwise, generally intimidated by. Here are a few other notes about the class: -This is purely a preparational class with a hands-on, laboratory-based approach, making this a safe, manageable, academic environment for every kid. -The classes at NVAP are priced considerably less than the exact same class offered in other towns where I teach it. -Each of the classes will be capped at 16 students. On a personal note, as a resident of Bolton, with kids in our school system, I am really excited to be able to (finally) offer the class to our area, rather than offering it exclusively to towns closer to Boston. If you know of students and/or families that might be interested in enrolling in either of the two sessions that I am offering, please feel free to share this email with them, or direct them to the website shared above. Thank you for your time, and if you have any questions, by all means, please reach out to me. Youth in Philanthropy Sudbury Priority Deadline to Apply: June 7, 2019 The Foundation for MetroWest’s Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) program is an experiential leadership development program designed to empower and educate local youth to become our community’s next generation of philanthropists – those who give their time, talent, and treasure for the common good. As participants of YIP, students learn about needs in our community, visit local nonprofits, and grant up to $10,000 to nonprofits benefiting youth. This free, 17-week program is for high school students who live or learn in MetroWest. YIP will meet on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00 to 8:30pm, at Grange Hall in Sudbury. The program begins on September 4 and runs through January 30. For more information about YIP and to apply, visit yipmetrowest.org.
